I passionately loathe corporate lingo, but the Two-Percent/Dying Breed/Art of Manliness co-op we've been seeing these past few weeks is peak 'synergy.' I'm running out of ways to express my appreciation for you all! Lol.

I'm glad you've enjoyed the collab!

Co-signed. Now we just need a three way collab with Best Made Co…

I have to imagine I'd be interested in their writing if you're also a fan of these authors. Are they on stack?

Definitely second this!

Appreciate you Ryker.

I started listening to Art of Manliness podcast at least 10 years ago. I actually think it’s how I first found out about the Comfort Crisis. Thinking back, it brought me to so many book recommendations: Ryan Holiday, Theodore Roosevelt biographies, and a ton more. It pushed me to read more and learn more right when I was starting my career and so many people around me just stopped doing those things. Great to see this interview.

Brett does a great job. I'm a big fan of his work.

It's awesome to see you two guys get together. I just want to express my gratitude and appreciation for what you guys do and put out there into the world. You guys have made a huge positive impact on my life and my family's in so many ways, and you most likely have affected many others that you don't even know about. Brett, you have introduced me to numerous things, but your interview with the F3 founders in 2015 was a pivotal moment for me. Then, once I joined F3, someone mentioned that a book was coming out that championed rucking. Michael, The Comfort Crisis reinforced and enhanced what I was and continue to experience. Thank you both!

Many thanks for the nice comment. I'm glad you've benefitted from the work!

This is epic. AoM is fantastic and I’ve started getting into the new Substack. Absolutely agree on parenting like it’s a video game and deadlifts and rucking for life. Awesome post to start the week!!

First heard of The comfort crisis on his podcast. They do great work

Brett and Kate are the real deal. I’ve been following AOM since its inception in ‘08 (at the ripe old age of 18) and have literally & figuratively grown up alongside their content. Hard to put into words how much their work has improved my life. For those that haven’t experienced their Strenuous Life program, I’d highly recommend it. A perfect fit for the 2% community.

Thanks for being with us from the beginning and for being a part of TSL!

Interesting pod, I enjoy The AOM and Brett has a great voice as well. But hearing this felt very robotic. I felt like the answers were his but we know the voice and it just felt off. Not to say this didn't work for what you needed it to but woulda been nice to hear an actual convo with the two of you again.

He used AI for my voice. That's why it sounds like a robot. This was a text based interview.

I heard him mention that, and I understand he was trying something new and while he's away it could be a useful tool. I just would have preferred to hear an actual conversation between you two. That's all nothing serious, just a preference, I'm just another nobody commenting.

Trust me, you didn't want to hear our conversation in audio lol. We talked for a couple hours and went all over the place! It was a really fun conversation but we both agreed we wanted to run it as an edited Q&A.

I view the convo as best in writing, but I know some people prefer listening over reading, so used AI instead of reading Brett's answers in my own voice. I figured that would give the listener a better sense of who was questioning versus answering, but noted about the robot voice. Thanks for the feedback!

Agree. I felt responses were very robotic. Needs some work.

Really liked this one. I’m not a video person (or audio for that matter). I’d rather read it. I resort to video only when I need to see how something is done like an exercise or repairing an appliance.

Also, the difference between health and performance. This has been hard for me. Trying to change decades of sports and military mindset to being much older where being healthy is itself a challenge has been difficult.

It was a challenge for me to switch from performance to health. I wrote about my experience with it here: https://www.artofmanliness.com/character/behavior/the-art-of-moving-on-when-and-how-to-disengage-from-a-goal/

Excellent. Thank you so much. Still a lot to learn as I approach 70.

I'm a big fan of the AoM podcast and have kept my daughter (and myself) entertained for many hours with the "world's best paper aeroplane" page on their website.

Man, the article has brought us so much traffic. Google, for some reason, has kept ranking it in the top search results. Didn't see that coming. I'm not complaining!

Well its a great paper aeroplane!

Wow I feel like I met my new BFF. Great Q&A.

The AI version of your voice was pretty spot on, almost eerily so. The AI didn’t leave room for space in the conversation like it would in real life, but honestly, was a pretty good stand in. It can definitely fill in while you’re out in the desert.

Expand full comment

It certainly captured the voice, but I found the volume levels and inflections were a bit off so you didn't quite sound like yourself.

I tried the podcast but had to stop. I'm impressed with how the AI impersonated Michael but it did not work for this edited interview type format. Additionally, I came here for your work and your voice and not an AI recreation. I really hope that you do not rely on it while you are in the wilderness.

Love this, wish it was longer. No video doesn’t bother me but a recorded conversation would be solid.

Hey Michael if you went back to see Herzog in the filming of Fitzcarraldo, how would you deal with the insanity of Kinski? According to legend the indigenous people in the movie offered to kill him for Herzog.

Expand full comment

Herzog said the following about Kinski on that shoot: "People think we had a love-hate relationship. Well, I did not love him, nor did I hate him. We had mutual respect for each other, even as we both planned each other's murder."

That sounds like a fair relationship, given the circumstances lol.

Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre The Wrath of God are two of the freakiest movies I have ever seen, also fascinating.
