This post has got me thinking about adding a sled to my fitness mix. Anyone have experience with this Rogue Pack Sled? Looks perfect for rucking to a location and adding some sled work — https://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-pack-sled
I don't think that pack sled was available when I bought the one above. The 35e gets the job done. It's nothing special, but it packs easily and works.
One workout you may want to add is to do a long ruckless walk. I would target 40-50 miles maybe a few weeks before the event to get the feel for the distance. Just a thought. Good luck on the training!
Michael, now that you have completed the 50 mile ruck, are there are lessons learned that might impact future training for a similar or longer distance? Do you think your longest training ruck (I believe you said about 25-30 miles) was enough? I am thinking of attempting a 75 miler in March 2025 (may be too close to train sufficiently as my max is 17 miles so far but have a good base of about 700 miles YTD and lots of strength training) or March 2026. Not a lot of info out there on training for these type events.
I’ll be there doing the 80km in Normandy too! What footwear are you planning on wearing? I’m undecided on Mac V1s or wearing my Altra’s just for the distance?
Craig, what did you decide and would you go the same way. I am just contemplating doing a 75 mile ruck and have plenty of training ahead. I love my Altra Olympus 5's, so had not thought about considering something else.
Gah, I wish I could join you in Normandy but I'm training with our ruck club for a local Oregon 50 miler since that isn't in the cards. Great timing for this post!
Great info on training up for a 50 mile ruck. I did the GORUCK Star Course 50 in 2019 and trained similar to this. That said, I can't suggest anyone participate in GORUCK events anymore. They claim to care about building community and better Americans, but the people running things at HQ only care about the bottom line and avoiding any conflict.
This is a great and timely article. I'm not training for anything as ambitious as fifty miles but I AM training to ruck the Missoula Half Marathon at the end of June. I ruck 3+ miles/day and hit 100 miles total in March (198 mile YTD). The shoulder and back strengthening stuff is key. I have the legs for it already, I think, but my shoulders get pretty sore once I start getting up around 5-6 miles.
This is timely! I’m planning a long ruck (long for me, anyway) of about 11 miles later this spring. You’ve mentioned wearing the ruck just doing stuff, so this is my official reminder to start that in the coming weeks.
Had anyone here tried rucking with ruck loops? I just bought some online. Seems like they can help a lot with heavier weight but can also cause some trouble with your elbows if you depend on them too much.

I haven't seen that sled! It looks cool.
I have this sled: https://www.roguefitness.com/s-35e-rogue-e-sled

Thanks!!
Is the Apple Podcast version available?
Love "hiding the miles" across the week..this has been key for increasing the tolerance we all need. SEE YOU THERE !

Which shoes do you plan on wearing?

Altras 100%! my feet were still pretty beat up after the 80km. But that wasn’t the shoes fault, it was mine for not tending to my feet early enough!

Examples of low intensity restorative strength work? How do you identify needs?
Hope to see more of this content as you continue your build and would love to see feedback after the event.
